Root Canal Therapy Q & A

What is root canal therapy?

Your teeth have three layers. The enamel is the shell that covers the inner layer of dentin, which makes up most of your tooth. At the very center of your teeth, you have the pulpy interior that houses the blood vessels and nerves that keep your teeth alive.

When tooth decay or infection penetrates to the center of your tooth, root canal therapy is the process of removing the damaged tissue and bacteria before filling and sealing the tooth to prevent future infection.

While root canals have a bad reputation, the endodontists at Beverly Hills Innovative Endodontics use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques, which reduce the potential discomfort during and after your procedure. Root canal therapy is one of the most effective ways to prevent adult tooth loss.

What happens during root canal therapy?

Your endodontist begins root canal therapy by numbing your tooth and the surrounding gums. When you are completely numb, they use a special drill to reach the inside of your tooth.

Depending on your needs, your endodontist uses either traditional root canal techniques or GentleWave. In traditional root canal therapy, they use special tools to file away the decayed tissue before rinsing and cleaning your tooth.

If they use GentleWave, they insert the device into your tooth and release broad-spectrum acoustic energy and a vortex of fluid to penetrate deep into your tooth, removing damaged tissue, debris, and bacteria from even the microscopic bacteria traps in your teeth.

When your endodontist has removed the decayed tissue and bacteria, they fill your tooth with a rubber-like cement and seal your tooth with a filling. If they had to remove a lot of tissue from the inside of your tooth, they might fit you with a crown to provide extra protection for your weakened tooth.

What are the signs that I need root canal therapy?

In many cases, you might need root canal therapy, but not have any symptoms at all. In fact, the first time you know that you need a root canal is when your dentist takes routine X-rays. However, if you develop any tooth pain, temperature sensitivity, or sore, swollen gums, make an appointment with your dentist to find out what’s causing your symptoms.

If you need root canal therapy, call Beverly Hills Innovative Endodontics or schedule an appointment online for expert treatment.
